How to Choose Furniture Colour & Finish to Match Your Flooring

When it comes to decorating your home, choosing furniture is about more than simply finding what you like. It’s also essential to consider how each piece works with your flooring to create a welcoming, balanced space. Read on for tips and ideas on how to match your furniture to your floors—and don’t be afraid to get creative!

 

1. Embrace Contrast
Using contrast between your flooring and furniture can create depth and interest in any room. For dark floors, try lighter furniture to make each piece stand out, while for lighter floors, consider darker or richer finishes. This not only gives your space a balanced look but also highlights your furniture as an intentional focal point.

 

2. Match the Texture
The texture and finish of your flooring also come into play. If your wooden floors have a matt look, consider furniture with a similar matt finish for a relaxed, unified feel. Glossy flooring? A bit of sheen on your furniture can add a dash of sophistication.

3. Understand Undertones
Each type of wood or flooring material has warm or cool undertones. When choosing furniture, consider these undertones. For instance, warm-toned floors, like oak or walnut, pair beautifully with similarly warm furniture finishes, while cool tones (such as grey or ash) look best with pieces in complementary cool hues like soft blues, whites, or blacks.   • For a classic countryside vibe, go with a pine-effect floor and Shaker-style furniture, enhanced by white panelled walls to capture that warm and rustic charm.
